Italy will be represented at the Peace Council meeting organized by American President Donald Trump by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, not by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Italy's participation as an observer and not as a member is based on the provisions of the Italian Constitution, which stipulates that the country can join international bodies only on equal terms.
Tajani emphasized Italy's importance in the Mediterranean region and mentioned that its presence in Washington is a political choice that respects the Constitution but allows Italy to remain part of a European strategy.
Italy's presence at the meeting in the US criticized by the Italian opposition
Criticism from the Italian opposition has intensified, accusing the government that participation in the Peace Council, even as an observer, violates Article 11 of the Constitution. Opposition leaders, such as Elly Schlein and Giuseppe Conte, condemned the decision, considering that it undermines Italy's diplomatic tradition and that Meloni is acting in Trump's interest, thus ignoring national interests. Senator Carlo Calenda described the Peace Council as a "cabal of dictators" and criticized Italy's involvement in this project, considering it offends the dignity of the country.
We remind that President Nicușor Dan is going to the United States on Wednesday, to participate, on Thursday, in Washington, at the first meeting of Donald Trump's Peace Council. At the Peace Council, Romania will have observer status, just like Italy.
