Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni contested on Friday the claims of American President Donald Trump, who stated that she had begged him to take a picture with her at the G7 summit. Meloni described Trump's statements as "completely fabricated" and emphasized that neither Italy nor she begs. Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani announced that he canceled a planned visit to the United States in response to Trump's statements, considering them offensive to all of Italy.
Trump made the comments during an interview, mentioning that Meloni had really wanted a picture with him. The relationship between Meloni and Trump was initially very good, but it deteriorated after Italy's refusal to allow the use of a military base for raids during the war in Iran. Although Meloni stated that their relationship had not changed, Trump mentioned that he felt "abandoned" by her.
