Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has requested the registration of her own voice as a trademark at European Union level, following several cases in which her image and voice were used in content manipulated with the help of artificial intelligence.
The application was filed on October 5 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and includes an audio recording of approximately four seconds. In the recording, Meloni says the phrase “Io sono Giorgia” (“I am Giorgia”) twice, which has become one of the expressions associated with her public image.
The expression was used by the prime minister in a political speech delivered in 2019, gave the title to her 2021 autobiography, and was later turned into a disco song.
The move comes after several online fakes emerged, including pornographic images in which Giorgia Meloni’s face was used without authorization. The prime minister warned that such materials can fuel disinformation and harm people who lack the resources to defend themselves.
The application is still being examined by EUIPO. Even if approved, the trademark could not completely prevent voice cloning with the help of artificial intelligence, but it could provide new legal tools against unauthorized uses.
In 2024, Meloni launched legal proceedings against a man from Sardinia, accused of creating and distributing fake pornographic images using her face. The case is still pending before the Italian courts.
