The information presented below is intended to provide visitors with more details about the placement, use, and management of cookies by Strategic Media Team S.R.L. (hereinafter referred to as “SMT”), as the owner of the website.

1. What do we use cookies for?

SMT uses its own cookies as well as third-party cookies to provide visitors with an efficient/better browsing experience, to improve the functioning of the website, to generate anonymous statistics regarding how the website is used, and to improve the services offered.

2. What is a cookie?

A cookie (also known as a browser cookie, tracking cookie, HTTP cookie, or simply cookie) is a small file, often encrypted, consisting of letters and numbers, which is downloaded and stored on the visitor’s device (e.g., computer, mobile device).

When an internet browser (e.g., Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge) loads a web page, that page sends information to the browser in the form of a text file (cookie), and each time a visitor accesses that website, the browser recognizes and sends the cookie back to the website’s server.

Most of the time, a cookie contains only the URL of the website that created it, the lifetime of the cookie, and a randomly generated unique number. The installed cookie is completely passive, meaning it does not contain software programs, viruses, or spyware and cannot access, scan, or read information on the visitor’s device.

In addition to cookies, there are technical means assimilated to cookies, used for the same purposes (e.g., pixels, widgets, device-associated identifiers). For the purposes of this document, the term “cookie” includes both cookies themselves and similar technologies.

Once installed on a device, depending on its characteristics, a cookie can communicate to the browser exactly where the visitor left off on a website, can uniquely identify a visitor and notify the website each time the visitor returns, can store visitor preferences (e.g., the language used if the website can display content in multiple languages), or the visitor’s browsing history.

Technically, only the server of the website that sent the cookie can access it again when the visitor returns to that website and thus recognize the visitor.

Cookies themselves do not request personal data in order to be used and, in most cases, do not reveal the visitor’s identity and do not personally identify internet users.

The lifespan of a cookie depends on its purpose and is usually determined. From the perspective of duration, there are two main categories of cookies:

Session cookies: stored temporarily in the browser’s cookie folder and deleted when the visitor leaves the respective web page/website or closes the browser window. They act similarly to bookmarks and allow the website (which has no memory of its own), for example, to remember information selected as a visitor navigates from one web page to another. Without them, the new page would not recognize previous activity.
Persistent or tracking cookies: stored on the visitor’s device for a predetermined lifespan or until manually deleted by the visitor. They store information about visitors and their preferences (e.g., language used) for future visits, thereby speeding up or improving the browsing experience.

3. What cookies do we use?

SMT uses the following types of cookies:

a) Strictly necessary cookies for the functioning of the website, such as user authentication and account management. The website cannot function properly without these cookies, and they may be stored on the visitor’s device without requiring consent.

b) Performance cookies, used to understand how visitors use the website. These cookies cannot be used to directly identify a specific visitor.

c) Targeting cookies, used to identify visitors across different websites, for example content partners or banner networks, to build a profile of visitor interests or to display relevant advertisements on other websites.

d) Functionality cookies, used to store visitor information on the website (e.g., language, time zone, enhanced content).

e) Unclassified cookies, which do not fall into any other category or are in the process of classification. These cookies may be used only with the visitor’s consent.

The cookies used by SMT aim to collect the following information about visitors, which is used to prepare aggregated statistical reports on visitor activity without identifying them: location (country, region, city, approximate latitude and longitude – geolocation), date and time of the request (site visit), title of the viewed page, URL of the viewed page (page URL), URL of the page viewed before the current page (referrer URL), device screen resolution, local visitor time zone, accessed and downloaded files (Downloads), internal ID, status (active, inactive), primary browser language, browser version, operating system, device identifier (User-Agent header).

Matomo

SMT uses the services of Matomo for analysis/statistics and website improvement purposes. The Matomo Analytics solution allows SMT to collect information in anonymous format and analyze data directly, without using third parties. The collected information is used in aggregated form only by SMT, solely for statistical purposes, and is not disclosed to any other party.

Matomo cookies allow SMT to use the following visitor information to generate aggregated statistics about visitor activity:

IP address (masked)
Location: country, region, city, approximate latitude and longitude (geolocation)
Date and time of request (site visit)
Title of the viewed page
URL of the viewed page
URL of the page viewed before the current page (referrer URL)
User device screen resolution
Local visitor time zone
Files clicked and downloaded (Download)
Links clicked to an external domain (Outlink)
Page generation time (time required for web pages to be generated by the web server and then downloaded by the visitor – page speed)
Primary browser language used (Accept-Language header)
Browser version, browser plugins (PDF, Flash, Java, etc.), operating system version, device identifier (User-Agent header)

SMT retains full control over the data collected through Matomo cookies by storing the data on servers fully owned and controlled by SMT. Since it uses Matomo Cloud services, SMT has concluded a personal data processing agreement with Matomo.

The Matomo solution also generates a persistent cookie that creates a random ID, allowing SMT to identify when a user returns to the website. This cookie has an expiration date of up to 13 months, after which it is automatically deleted from the user’s device.

Google Analytics

SMT uses the Google Analytics service, provided by Google Ireland Limited, for analysis/statistics and website improvement purposes. This service uses analytics cookies to collect aggregated information about how the website is used, such as: number of visitors, approximate geographic areas from which visitors originate, pages visited, visit duration, and the page from which visitors arrived at the website. The information collected through these cookies is processed in aggregated form and is not used by SMT to directly identify you.

According to information provided by Google, the servers on which this data is processed are located worldwide, so the data may be transferred and processed outside the country where you are located, including in countries outside the European Economic Area. Google states that it applies the same level of data protection regardless of server location, in accordance with its privacy policy and applicable international transfer mechanisms.

Links to other websites and social media platforms

SMT may use social media platforms (e.g., Facebook) to improve online visibility, and the icons of these platforms are displayed on the SMT website. Additionally, the services provided by SMT may involve redirecting visitors to other websites via links. If you click on any of these icons or links, you will be redirected to the respective websites. The data controllers that manage social media platforms and websites process personal data in accordance with their own personal data processing/privacy/cookie policies, which we recommend that you read carefully.

4. How can cookies be disabled?

When the SMT website is accessed for the first time from a specific browser, SMT informs the visitor about the existence of cookies through a pop-up window, where the visitor can consult information about cookies, access the cookie policy, select desired cookies, and accept or refuse cookies. Please note that cookie preferences can be modified at any time by accessing the website and the icon implemented in the lower-left corner of the page. We emphasize that for strictly necessary (essential) cookies required for the functioning of the website, consent is not requested and it is not possible to modify/disable them.

Users can configure their internet browser to reject cookies or to accept cookies from a specific website. If strictly necessary or functionality cookies are disabled, the SMT website/web pages will not function or will function improperly, and certain features will not be available (for example, returning to a previous page when navigating the website within a single session).

Some browsers have a “Do Not Track” feature that allows visitors not to be tracked while browsing. Blocking cookies or using the “Do Not Track” mode may block certain functionalities on our websites.
