Boiko Borisov, former Prime Minister of Bulgaria and leader of the pro-European GERB party, suffered a historic defeat in the early parliamentary elections, coming in second with 13.38% of the votes. Rumen Radev, the big winner of the election, obtained 44.6% of the votes and 130 mandates out of the 240 available, thus forming a single-party government.
Borisov acknowledged that Radev now has a comfortable majority in Parliament and emphasized that he will lead a constructive opposition. Radev's triumph was interpreted as a protest vote against corruption and inflation, sanctioning the traditional parties that have led Bulgaria into a continuous political crisis. Radev resigned from the presidency to run for election, now having the support of the judges of the Constitutional Court appointed by him.
