PSD proposes making school uniforms mandatory in pre-university education, starting with the next school year. Social Democratic Senator Daniel Zamfir argues that the measure would reduce material differences among students and limit instances of bullying associated with clothing.
According to the initiators, the uniform would not be identical in all schools. Each educational institution would establish its own design together with parents, students and the teaching council.
Daniel Zamfir said on Tuesday, at the Palace of Parliament, that schools should focus on what students are capable of and on their results, not on their family’s financial means. The senator said the uniform should be a symbol of belonging and pride in one’s school, not a form of coercion.
The proposal comes amid discussions in the Education Committee. Zamfir criticized the reactions of some committee members, claiming that the discussions had been turned into a “political circus.” The bill is to be examined through the parliamentary procedure before any possible adoption.
