AUR accuses PSD of copying the mandatory school uniforms bill, adopted by the Senate on Monday

The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) accuses the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of claiming credit for a legislative initiative concerning the introduction of compulsory school uniforms, after the Senate adopted on Monday the bill amending the Pre-university Education Law.

The party claims that it submitted a similar bill as early as the previous legislative term and promoted the same measure during the current term, without the initiative being finalized. However, AUR senators voted for the bill adopted by the Senate, arguing that uniforms could reduce social differences among students, bullying, and the financial pressure on parents.

AUR Senator Nicolae Vlahu, identified as one of the initiators of the party’s bill, called the PSD’s action “plagiarism” and said that uniforms could strengthen the sense of belonging to the school. In turn, Senators Virgiliu Vlăescu and Mircia Chelaru argued that uniforms would represent a symbol of prestige, identity, dignity, and respect for rules.

According to the bill adopted by the Senate, students in pre-university education would be required to attend classes in uniform, in accordance with the regulations of each educational institution. The legislative proposal will follow the parliamentary procedure provided by law.
