A bill initiated by PSD lawmakers proposes introducing mandatory school uniforms in Romania’s state education system

School uniforms could become mandatory in state-run educational institutions in Romania after a bill initiated primarily by PSD lawmakers received a favorable opinion from the Senate’s Committee for Public Administration. The proposal seeks to amend the Pre-University Education Law and was registered with the Senate in June.

Under the bill, students would be required to wear uniforms at school, but the design would not be set at the national level. The decision would rest with the administrative council of each educational institution, following mandatory consultations with student and parent representatives.

The initiative also provides for the possibility of local authorities contributing to the purchase of uniforms. For students from vulnerable families or disadvantaged backgrounds, the basic uniform kit could be provided free of charge or subsidized.

PSD Senator Alexandra Presură, one of the bill’s initiators, argues that the measure could reduce bullying and discrimination associated with families’ financial circumstances. Critics of the proposal warn, however, that social differences would not disappear but would instead be reflected in students’ phones, footwear, school supplies, holidays, or pocket money.

The bill has received several favorable opinions, but the Economic and Social Council issued a negative opinion. The report of the Committee for Education is next, followed by a vote in the Senate plenary. The Chamber of Deputies is the decision-making body.»?
