The United States has decided to impose a 25% tariff on some imported products from Brazil, following a year-long investigation that concluded Brazil has engaged in unfair trade practices.
The U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, emphasized that Brazil's policies affect the interests of American companies and consumers, particularly in the area of digital trade and access to the ethanol market. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused President Lula da Silva's government of bad faith in negotiations, stating that his economic policies are harmful.
The new tariffs will take effect on July 22, but certain products, such as raw materials and pharmaceuticals, will be exempt.
The investigation was initiated under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the U.S. to respond to harmful trade practices.
Unlike the relationship with China, the U.S. had a trade surplus with Brazil of $14.4 billion last year.
