The President of the USA, Donald Trump, imposed a new set of extensive tariffs on Friday, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, for 60 countries, to replace a global 10% tax that was set to expire, thus triggering a wave of criticism and protests from allies and major trading partners of the USA.

These tariffs will replace the global 10% tariff that expires on the same day.

The measure targets important trading partners, such as China, India, and the European Union, and is justified by the fact that these countries have not taken sufficient measures against forced labor.

The U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, emphasized that the USA has banned imports made through forced labor for nearly a century.

The new tariffs, established under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, will affect most imports, but products such as oil and natural gas are exempt.

Criticism from the targeted countries, such as Brazil and Chile, has emerged, accusing the measure of being arbitrary and unjustified.

Human rights activists believe that these tariffs could help reduce forced labor, a phenomenon that affects millions of people globally.
