The President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, emphasized on Tuesday the importance of trade relations with China, in the context of the United States proposing a punitive tariff of 25% on numerous imports from Brazil. Lula welcomed China's recognition of Brazil as being free of foot-and-mouth disease, considering it a positive reaction to the American measures.

During an event in Goias, Lula stated: "If you don't want to buy from me, I will sell to someone else." The president mentioned that trade discussions with American negotiators did not lead to an agreement, accusing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro of lobbying for the imposition of tariffs. Lula also criticized U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, considering him anti-Latin America. Flavio Bolsonaro stated that he asked President Trump not to impose these tariffs.
