The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has condemned the Russian Federation in four cases involving five residents of Transnistria, finding illegal detentions, mistreatment, and violations of the right to freedom of movement and expression. Russia is required to pay total damages of over 100,000 euros. The lawyers of the Promo-LEX association, who represented the victims, emphasize that the ECHR's ruling directly incriminates the Russian Federation for the support given to the de facto administration in Tiraspol.
Among the cases discussed are the arrest of journalists Serghei and Nicolae Ilcenco, who were targeted by the Transnistrian authorities in 2015, and the case of stateless person Raușan Ahmetșin, who was wrongfully convicted. The ECHR established that their detentions were illegal and that they suffered inhumane conditions. Additionally, Serghei Vardiyașvili was arrested and forcibly expelled, while Petru Mustea was detained without sufficient legal grounds.
Although the Republic of Moldova was not found guilty, Promo-LEX calls on the Moldovan authorities to take concrete measures to protect citizens in Transnistria, including the establishment of support mechanisms for victims of abuses.
