The Czech government has decided to cap the profit margins of fuel distributors and to reduce the excise duty on diesel, in an attempt to limit the increase in pump prices. Prime Minister Andrej Babis announced that these measures will come into effect on April 8, setting profit margins at 2.50 crowns (0.12 dollars) and reducing the excise duty on diesel by 2.35 crowns, from 9.95 crowns per liter. Babis emphasized the chaos in Central Europe, where different countries have adopted various measures to cope with the energy crisis.
Fuel prices have risen significantly following attacks on Iran, with an average increase of 8 crowns for gasoline and 15 crowns for diesel. Additionally, the Czech government has decided to release 100,000 tons of oil from the state reserve to support the company Orlen Unipetrol, in the context of rising oil prices and disruptions in supplies from Russia.
