PSD will present on Monday, in the extraordinary session of Parliament, a package of emergency measures to reduce fuel prices, which includes lowering VAT from 21% to 19%, temporarily eliminating the excise duty on diesel, and capping the commercial markup.
MEP Gabriela Firea announced that the initiative, submitted by PSD deputy Bogdan Ivan, provides for declaring a state of crisis in the petroleum products market. Among the proposed solutions are limiting diesel exports to protect internal stocks and establishing a temporary solidarity contribution for operators with "crisis profits."
These measures are necessary in the context where the price of diesel could exceed 10 lei per liter, and Romania depends on imports for 77% of its oil resources. Firea emphasized that rising fuel prices will affect the entire economy, increasing inflation and transportation costs. Romania, with an inflation rate of 9.2%, cannot afford a new acceleration of it.
