The Ministry of Finance is maintaining the 25% reduction in the excise duty on standard diesel sold in Romania from October 1 to 15, 2026, amid persistent pressure on the fuel market. The measure continues the intervention applied during the previous period and aims to limit the impact of price increases on the population and the economy.
The reduction amounts to 701.07 lei per 1,000 liters, or 829.69 lei per tonne. As a result, the effective excise duty will stand at 2,103.22 lei per 1,000 liters, equivalent to 2,489.05 lei per tonne.
The decision was made based on the mechanism provided for by Law No. 162/2026, which reassesses market indicators every two weeks. During the first half of October, international Platts diesel quotations increased by 63.70%, while the average pump price rose by 35.01%.
The Ministry of Finance says the intervention may limit the pass-through of costs into transport and logistics, as well as the effects on consumer goods prices. The authorities will continue to monitor developments in international quotations and pump prices.
The decision comes amid a global increase in diesel prices, attributed to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and supply problems affecting Russian refineries. According to an analysis cited by the Financial Times, European drivers are paying, on average, approximately 30 euros more per fill-up, while the price increases are generating additional costs of around 200 million euros per day across Europe.
