The Government is set to extend, on Friday, by another three months, the protective measures applied to the crude oil and petroleum products market. According to the draft decision, the crisis situation will be maintained between 1 November 2026 and 1 February 2027, amid rising international prices and pump prices.
The measures include reducing the excise duty on standard diesel by between 5% and 25%, depending on the evolution of quotations and prices, as well as limiting the commercial markup to the average level applied by each operator in 2025. The restrictions on exports and intra-Community deliveries of diesel and crude oil, which require the prior approval of the authorities, will also remain in place.
Data from the Ministry of Finance show that, in September 2026, the Platts quotation for diesel increased by 121% compared with the same month in 2025, while Brent crude became 58% more expensive. Over the same period, diesel became 38% more expensive at the pump, while gasoline increased by 33%.
Between 1 and 12 October, the average price reached 10.92 lei per litre for diesel and 10.11 lei for gasoline. Without the excise duty reduction, diesel would have cost approximately 11.72 lei per litre. The mechanism will be reviewed every 15 days and will be suspended if the indicators fall below the 5% threshold.
