Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced on Monday that the government intends to adopt a new Constitution and a new electoral law during the 2026–2030 legislative cycle. The statement was made in an interview with public radio station Kossuth, reports MTI, as cited by Agerpres.

“The goal is certainly to adopt a new Constitution and a new electoral law,” Magyar said. The prime minister noted that, from a practical standpoint, it would be more appropriate for the new Constitution to be adopted first, as it would have to be ratified by referendum.

Magyar argued that the new political majority, associated with the Tisza community, is “diverse,” but aims not to reproduce the old political system. He provided no details about the content of the future legislative acts or the exact timetable for the parliamentary procedures and the referendum.

The prime minister also announced a “significant” increase in the family allowance in 2027. The increase would be implemented gradually, depending on the state of public finances.

According to Magyar, the government inherited an 8.3% budget deficit from the previous administration and reduced it by 1,000 billion forints, equivalent to approximately 2.75 billion euros, in the first three months.

Maintaining budgetary balance, reducing the deficit, and streamlining the administration are the government’s main priorities, according to the prime minister. He said that the evolution of public finances would influence future salary increases for civil servants, income tax cuts, and increases in family allowances, whose value has not changed since 2008.
