The Italian government has decided to reintroduce a temporary reduction in excise duties on diesel, in response to the rise in energy prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East, which has generated protests against the increase in fuel costs. The measure, announced by the Minister of Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, will reduce the price of diesel by 0.17 euros per liter until August 6 and will cost the state approximately 125 million euros.

Although it does not apply to gasoline, Giorgetti mentioned that the government could take new measures to reduce electricity and gas bills, considering the economic impact of rising prices. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that, although the reduction does not solve the underlying problem, it is a quick and responsible reaction.

Italy, along with Germany, is one of the most affected countries in Europe by the rise in energy prices. Criticism from the European Commission and the IMF highlights the need for better-targeted measures for vulnerable households.
