The European Commission announced that it has been invited by American President Donald Trump to join the proposed "Peace Council," but it did not clarify whether it will accept the invitation.
The spokesperson for the Commission, Olof Gill, emphasized that the EU's priority is peace in Gaza and that President Ursula von der Leyen is in contact with European leaders.
Trump has invited about 60 countries to participate, but those wishing for a permanent seat must pay a fee of one billion dollars. The Council will have the role of overseeing the reconstruction of Gaza and addressing global conflicts.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is among the invitees, as well as leaders from France, Germany, Canada, and Romania, Nicușor Dan.
The draft charter criticizes existing institutions, such as the UN, and calls for a more efficient organization. Trump will have extended powers, including the right to invite or revoke members. The term for members will be three years, except for those who contribute significantly financially.
On the other hand, the invitation also comes with a price tag; a permanent seat in the new Peace Council costs at least one billion dollars.
