Călin Georgescu was called the “president-elect” at a monastery in Oradea / The Diocese announces an internal investigation

Archimandrite Atanasie of the “Holy Cross” Monastery called Călin Georgescu the “president-elect” during a service attended by the former presidential candidate. The statement, captured in a video recording distributed on social media, was met with applause from some of the worshippers.

The Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Oradea announced that the circumstances and implications of the moment would be examined according to church regulations. The institution stated that, before the incident, the clergy and monastic establishments had been given guidance on the incompatibility between sacred space and political manifestations.

The Diocese emphasizes that the checks do not concern the personal political views of the archimandrite or the worshippers, but rather the use of spiritual authority and the place of worship to legitimize or promote a political figure.

The diocese’s position is based on the rules of the Holy Synod, which prohibit clergy and monastics from partisan involvement and from using church spaces, services, or insignia for political purposes. For now, it is not known whether Archimandrite Atanasie will be sanctioned.
