Călin Georgescu, detained for 24 hours by DIICOT prosecutors in a fraud case (Sources)

Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was detained on Monday evening by DIICOT prosecutors for 24 hours in a fraud case, according to Antena 3 and Digi24.

Prosecutors accuse Georgescu of having devised a fraud scheme carried out starting in 2021, in Romania and the United Kingdom, with estimated damages of 1.1 million euros. The investigation concerns a businessman from Buzău, Răzvan Leu, who claims that the former candidate allegedly asked him for one million euros as a guarantee for obtaining six million euros in financing. The money was allegedly intended to be used for a business involving precious materials.

According to prosecutors, another 100,000 euros was allegedly intended for Georgescu’s election campaign, with an expenditure plan for this amount also being presented. The allegations are to be verified as part of the criminal investigation.

This is the third criminal case in which Călin Georgescu is being investigated.

He won the first round of the presidential election in November 2024, a vote subsequently annulled by the Constitutional Court of Romania. The case is currently being updated.
