Călin Georgescu, led out of DIICOT in handcuffs / He was detained for fraud and forming an organized criminal group

Călin Georgescu and Ionel Rusen were detained on Monday, September 21, 2026, by DIICOT prosecutors, following searches carried out in Bucharest, Mogoșoaia, Ciolpani, and Buftea, in a case involving the formation of an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences.

The two were taken out of the DIICOT headquarters and transported to the Central Detention Center. Călin Georgescu did not make any statements, but showed his supporters the handcuffs on his wrists. Dozens of supporters gathered in front of the headquarters, while gendarmes installed barriers and deployed negotiators.

According to DIICOT, the group was allegedly formed in September 2021 by two Romanian citizens and an Italian. Investigators claim that they allegedly misled a businessman by promising him external financing of up to 15 million euros. The victim allegedly transferred more than 1.1 million euros in the form of guarantees.

Following the searches, jamming systems, documents, storage devices, and documents suspected of being forged were seized. Prosecutors are expected to ask the Bucharest Tribunal to order the preventive detention of the two for 30 days.
