Călin Georgescu’s fraud case. The Bucharest Tribunal decides today whether the former presidential candidate will be placed in preventive detention

Călin Georgescu was detained on Monday for 24 hours and spent the night in the Central Detention Facility of the Bucharest Police, in a fraud case. The Bucharest Tribunal is due to decide on Tuesday whether the former presidential candidate will be placed in pretrial detention for 30 days, placed under house arrest, or released without preventive measures.

Prosecutors claim that Georgescu was part of a group that allegedly obtained more than one million euros from a businessman from Buzău, Răzvan Leu, in exchange for promising to facilitate a six-million-euro loan for him. Investigators say that part of the money was allegedly used to finance the electoral campaign, an accusation previously denied by Georgescu, who stated that he did not spend money in the elections.

The detention took place after searches lasting approximately nine hours were conducted at his home. Prosecutors seized documents, laptops, and the former candidate’s phone. Jamming devices and false documents were allegedly found in the house, along with documents bearing the insignia of the Sovereign Order of Malta, an organization that denied that they were authentic.

Businessmen Ionel Rusen and Massimiliano Arena also appear in the case. Following the announcement of the detention, Georgescu’s supporters gathered in front of the Central Detention Facility, chanting in his support.
