The Bucharest Tribunal will rule on Tuesday on Călin Georgescu’s request to replace preventive detention with house arrest or judicial supervision. The former presidential candidate is being investigated in a fraud case involving estimated damages of more than 1.1 million euros.
The ruling was initially expected on Monday, but the judge postponed the decision for one day. It is the same magistrate who had initially rejected the prosecutors’ request for preventive detention and ordered judicial supervision. The measure was challenged, and on September 29, the Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen to be detained for 30 days.
The court cited reasonable suspicions concerning the formation of an organized criminal group, fraud with particularly serious consequences, and indications that Georgescu may have been preparing to leave the country.
According to the prosecutors, Georgescu, Rusen, and an Italian citizen allegedly convinced a person to pay more than one million euros to obtain a loan. DIICOT placed Georgescu’s accounts and his villa in Mogoșoaia under seizure. The former candidate is also targeted in two other criminal cases.
