Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, will learn on Friday whether he will remain in pre-trial detention or be placed under house arrest in the fraud case involving estimated damages of €1.1 million. The decision is to be made by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which is hearing an appeal filed by prosecutors.
On October 13, the Bucharest Tribunal decided that Georgescu should be placed under house arrest. Prosecutors challenged the ruling, and the higher court is expected to issue its decision on Friday, October 23.
Pending the resolution of the appeal, the former candidate remains under investigation in the criminal case concerning the alleged fraud. The Bucharest Court of Appeal will examine the prosecutors’ arguments and the measures ordered by the Bucharest Tribunal, determining whether to uphold the house arrest or order a return to pre-trial detention. The court’s decision will determine the conditions under which Călin Georgescu will continue to be investigated in this case.
