The Bucharest Tribunal decided, on Tuesday, October 13, to replace preventive detention with house arrest in the case of Călin Georgescu, according to Mediafax sources. The former presidential candidate will have to remain at home, under the conditions and with the exceptions established by the court.
The request to replace the preventive measure was examined on Monday, October 12, and the ruling was postponed until the following day. The decision was made by Judge Vlad Andriescu, the same magistrate who, on September 22, had rejected DIICOT’s proposal for preventive detention and ordered judicial supervision for 60 days.
Subsequently, the Bucharest Court of Appeal admitted the prosecutors’ appeal and, on September 29, ordered Georgescu’s preventive detention for 30 days. The ruling was issued by a panel hearing a disagreement, after two judges failed to reach the same conclusion.
Călin Georgescu is being investigated by DIICOT for forming an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences, in a case concerning alleged damage of 1.1 million euros. The investigation concerns transactions involving precious metals and financing that allegedly did not materialize. Georgescu benefits from the presumption of innocence, and the change in the preventive measure does not constitute a ruling on the accusations.
