The Bucharest Tribunal postponed until Monday, at 12:00, the analysis of Călin Georgescu’s request to replace pretrial detention with house arrest or judicial supervision. The court is awaiting the reasoning of the Bucharest Court of Appeal regarding the recent decision to extend the pretrial detention warrant.
The lawyers of the former presidential candidate requested that pretrial detention be replaced with a more lenient measure. This is the second time Georgescu has filed this request in the case in which he is accused of forming an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences.
The Bucharest Court of Appeal definitively decided to extend the pretrial detention by another 30 days, and the Bucharest Tribunal must take this ruling into account when examining the request.
The Tribunal’s decision will not be enforceable. Even if the court were to order the replacement of the measure, any release could take place only after the request and the ruling had been reviewed by the Bucharest Court of Appeal.
So far, the Bucharest Tribunal has decided three times to release Georgescu under one form or another. In all these situations, the Bucharest Court of Appeal definitively ruled that the DIICOT investigation must continue with the former candidate in pretrial detention.
