The Bucharest Tribunal has postponed until Tuesday its ruling on Călin Georgescu’s request to replace preventive detention with house arrest or judicial supervision in the case in which he is accused of fraud causing damages of more than 1.1 million euros.
The former presidential candidate was brought to court on Monday and was then taken to DIICOT, where computer searches continued. The decision will be made by the judge who initially rejected prosecutors’ proposal for preventive detention.
Georgescu was placed in preventive detention for 30 days by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, together with businessman Ionel Rusen. The court found reasonable suspicions that they had formed an organized criminal group and committed fraud with particularly serious consequences, as well as indications that Georgescu may have been preparing to leave the country. One judge issued a dissenting opinion.
According to investigators, the group allegedly persuaded a person to transfer more than 1.1 million euros under the pretext of obtaining bank financing. Prosecutors placed seizures on bank accounts and on a villa in Mogoșoaia. Georgescu has also been sent to trial in two other cases involving actions against the constitutional order and Legionary propaganda.
