Călin Georgescu will be brought before the Bucharest Tribunal on Monday, where the DIICOT request to extend his pretrial detention by another 30 days will be heard. The former presidential candidate has been held at the Capital's Central Detention Facility since September 29, in a case in which he is accused of having defrauded a businessman of 1.1 million euros.
According to the case documents, businessman Răzvan Leu was allegedly lured into a purported deal involving precious-metal transactions. To obtain a six-million-euro line of credit, he allegedly paid a one-million-euro guarantee, to which another 100,000 euros was subsequently added. The loan was never granted, and the money was allegedly not returned.
On October 13, the Bucharest Tribunal decided to replace pretrial detention with house arrest, but the Bucharest Court of Appeal overturned the ruling.
After his arrest, Georgescu was also targeted in two other cases. DIICOT accuses him of having requested that his villa in Mogoșoaia be scanned to identify recording devices, while prosecutors in Buftea are investigating an alleged Legionary salute made as he left a church.
