The Bucharest Court of Appeal upheld the DIICOT prosecutors’ appeal and definitively ordered the extension of Călin Georgescu’s pre-trial detention by 30 days. The decision was issued after the Bucharest Tribunal rejected the investigators’ request and ruled that the former presidential candidate should be investigated under judicial supervision.
Georgescu has been held at the Central Detention Facility of the Capital Police since September 29, 2026, when the Court of Appeal ordered his pre-trial detention for 30 days. In the DIICOT case, he is being investigated for forming an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences, as a continuing offense.
Prosecutors argued that maintaining the measure was necessary to conduct the investigation and prevent further offenses. The prosecution also cited an episode in which Georgescu allegedly asked for his home in Mogoșoaia to be checked to identify surveillance devices, as well as new statements from witnesses.
The investigation began with a complaint concerning estimated damages of approximately 1.1 million euros. Through his lawyers, Georgescu maintains that a less restrictive measure would be sufficient. The extension of his detention does not amount to a finding of guilt, and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
