The Dutch company Aukera Energy, co-founded by the Romanian Cătălin Breabăn and supported by billionaire Marcel van Poecke, is preparing a 250 MW / 500 MWh energy storage project in Gura Ialomitei, Romania. This will be one of the largest storage projects in Central and Eastern Europe, with an installed capacity of 299,754 MWh, aimed at integrating renewable energy into the national grid.
The project will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase currently underway and full completion expected by mid-2026. Funding comes from the National Recovery Plan and a credit facility of 60 million euros from Kommunalkredit Austria AG. Aukera Energy plans a total storage capacity of 2 GW in Romania and is developing renewable energy projects in several European countries. The project will contribute to stabilizing the electrical grid and reducing costs for consumers.
