The Government had its first reaction on Tuesday after the violence that broke out in Victory Square, during the farmers’ protest. Liviu Popescu, communications adviser at Victoria Palace, said in the official press group that, at that time, none of the representative associations of sheep farmers was present in the square.

The message came after journalists asked the Executive for an official position on the clashes between protesters and gendarmes. The press also requested information about interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s presence at the Government headquarters, but no answer was provided on this matter.

Several hundred farmers from across the country gathered in the capital before 10:00 a.m. for an unauthorized protest. The demonstrators left a list of demands at the Government, their main grievance being related to the blocking of live-animal exports.

At around 11:30 a.m., several participants jostled and fought with the gendarmes. The protesters threw bottles and other objects, and the violence broke out again around 3:00 p.m., when a group broke through the security forces’ cordons. Significant numbers of gendarmes were deployed in the area.
