The interim Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, stated that the referral to the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) regarding the SAFE ordinance is a "dangerous game," considering the context of the war in Ukraine.
Țoiu, who was at the NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Sweden, emphasized the importance of this agreement for national security and strategic infrastructure.
She also criticized the politicians who referred the matter to the Constitutional Court, stating that such actions undermine Romania's defense efforts.
"Unfortunately, while here, alongside allies, we are working for Romania to be safer and stronger, in Bucharest some politicians rushed to attack the Constitutional Court even regarding the ordinance through which the 16 billion euros reach the army and the defense industry. They can invoke any procedural formalism, but the reality is much simpler. When you count the funding for Romania's defense, at a time when Russia is waging war at our border, you are playing a dangerous game. Our allies see this, and so do Romanians. Because SAFE means money for our army, for the Romanian defense industry, but also 4.2 billion euros for highways and national roads with a strategic role, including those in northern Moldova," wrote Țoiu on Facebook.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Sorin Grindeanu, challenged the ordinance, arguing that it was adopted by a dismissed government, which would violate the Constitution.
The SAFE agreement is considered a major opportunity for Romania, not only in the field of defense but also for infrastructure development, including in Moldova.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan highlighted the advantages of this agreement, including equipping the army with modern technology and integration into the European defense industry.
