Italian director Tinto Brass, famous for the erotic films “Salon Kitty” and “Caligula,” has died at the age of 93. His family confirmed his death to the Ansa news agency on Wednesday.
Born in Milan, Brass initially studied law, then turned to filmmaking. He worked at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris and as an assistant to Roberto Rossellini before making his directorial debut in 1963. His career was marked by conflicts with Italian censorship.
International success came with “Salon Kitty” (1976), while “Caligula” (1979) became his best-known production, despite disputes over the editing and content added without his consent. Brass is survived by his wife, Caterina Varzi, and children Bonifacio and Beatrice.
