American actor Dennis Haskins, known for playing Principal Richard “Belding” in the series “Saved by the Bell,” has died at the age of 75. His death was confirmed Monday by his agent, Jay Schachter, but the cause of death was not made public.
Haskins became famous in the 1990s for his character Mr. Belding, the principal of Bayside High School, one of the most recognizable roles in American teen television. “Saved by the Bell” aired on NBC between 1989 and 1993.
The actor first played the character in 1988, in the Disney Channel production “Good Morning, Miss Bliss.” After the launch of “Saved by the Bell,” he continued playing Principal Belding in “Saved by the Bell: The New Class,” which aired until 2000.
Born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Haskins studied at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Before acting, he worked in the music industry as a manager, agent and concert promoter, collaborating with Tom Jones and Gregg Allman, among others.
He later appeared in productions including “Magnum, P.I.,” “The Twilight Zone” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” His agent, who was also his friend for more than two decades, described him as an extraordinary man who was deeply loved by fans.
