American actor Walter Koenig, known for portraying Pavel Chekov in the Star Trek series, died on Sunday evening at the age of 90 at his home in North Hollywood, California. His representatives announced his death on Monday, saying that the actor died of natural causes associated with his age.
Koenig played Chekov, a Russian officer aboard the USS Enterprise, in the original Star Trek series and in several films in the franchise. The character became more prominent in the feature films, particularly in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Through this role, the series also satirized the Soviet tendency to claim credit for humanity’s great inventions.
The actor’s representatives said that he left a lasting impression on several generations of fans. Koenig regularly attended conventions and public events, where he expressed his appreciation for the community built around the series.
George Takei, his Star Trek castmate, said that Walter Koenig was more than the character Chekov: he was a writer, teacher, loyal friend and thoughtful person. The actor also had other television appearances, including in the science-fiction series Babylon 5.
