A 41-year-old Romanian man who had been missing for several days in Italy was found dead in the Calore River, near Torre Palazzo in Benevento province. The body of Constantin Găbureanu was discovered on Thursday, October 8, 2026, following an extensive search operation.
The man lived in Ponte and had been working for several months for a company involved in the construction of the high-speed railway line. He had not been seen since Saturday evening, and people close to him alerted the authorities.
The search was carried out by firefighters from Benevento, the Carabinieri and officers from the Torrecuso Local Police. Specialized teams searched the river and its banks using an inflatable boat, while the operation included ground searches, topographical checks and helicopter overflights.
The Romanian man's Volkswagen was found in a nearby parking lot, leading investigators to focus on the Calore River and the surrounding areas. Before his disappearance, the man had reportedly been involved in a dispute outside a bar, following an exchange of words with several people.
The investigation is being coordinated by prosecutor Maria Colucci. The Carabinieri are questioning witnesses to reconstruct the victim's movements after he left the bar. An autopsy will establish the cause of death, while investigators are checking whether the man accidentally fell into the water or whether another person was involved. So far, this possibility has not been confirmed.
