A 44-year-old Romanian man died on Saturday night into Sunday morning after suffering burns to approximately 80% of his body in a fire that broke out on October 17, 2026, at a home in Capaccio Paestum, Salerno province, Italy. The man, who lived in Eboli, was visiting together with his partner.
The fire was reported through multiple calls to the emergency number, some of which indicated the possibility of an explosion. Firefighters from Agropoli found the property engulfed in flames. The victim was on the upper floor, while his partner, who was on the first floor, managed to escape unharmed.
The Romanian man was taken to the hospital in Roccadaspide and intubated. Doctors later requested that he be transferred by helicopter to the Major Burns Center at Cardarelli Hospital in Naples. Despite the rapid intervention and medical care, his condition worsened, and he died.
Carabinieri are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. Investigators are also considering the possibility of an accidental explosion caused by fireworks or firecrackers, but this version has not been officially confirmed. The home was severely damaged by the flames.
