A 56-year-old Romanian worker died at San Salvatore Hospital in L’Aquila, Italy, after suffering serious injuries in a workplace accident on September 30, 2026, at a construction site in Cagnano Amiterno, in the province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo. The man fell from scaffolding while working at an agritourism facility.
The victim, identified by the initials M.I., worked for a company from Lazio that was carrying out work under a subcontract. After the accident, emergency responders intervened at the scene, and the worker was airlifted to hospital in extremely serious condition. Doctors tried to save his life, but he remained hospitalized until his death on October 11.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident began immediately after the fall. That same day, the judicial authorities placed the construction site under seizure and asked ASL inspectors to verify the working conditions and compliance with safety regulations.
Investigators must determine what prevention and protection measures were available, whether they were sufficient, and under what conditions the scaffolding was being used. The reconstruction of the accident will clarify any shortcomings or violations of safety rules.
The deceased’s body is at the disposal of prosecutor Andrea Papalia, who is expected to decide whether forensic examinations should be carried out to establish the cause of death and the link between the injuries sustained and the death. Prosecutors are also checking whether the accident could have been prevented.
