A 34-year-old Romanian worker died on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, inside the Seven Seas Prestige, a ship under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, near Venice. The man worked for a subcontracting company and was carrying out welding work in an enclosed area of the ship.
The alarm was raised at around 11:00 a.m., after the worker was found in serious condition. His colleagues tried to provide first aid, but some of them also reported feeling unwell. Medical crews from the Suem 118 service and firefighters intervened at the scene, and a forensic doctor from Padua confirmed the death.
The cause of death has not been established. Firefighters from the unit specializing in nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological risks took measurements and collected samples to identify any potentially hazardous substances. Investigators are considering possible poisoning or a lack of oxygen, but these hypotheses have not been confirmed.
Occupational safety inspectors from the Ulss 3 Serenissima health authority are investigating the case. The area was placed under seal, and shipyard operations were suspended for one day as a sign of mourning. Fincantieri expressed its condolences to the family and said it was supporting the investigation.
