A 34-year-old Romanian worker died on Tuesday at around 10:30 a.m. at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Venice, while carrying out welding work in an enclosed space inside a ship under construction. Authorities suspect poisoning caused by toxic fumes or gases that had accumulated inside the vessel.
Three subcontracted workers who intervened to help him also reported feeling unwell and were taken to hospital. One of them, a 50-year-old man, is in serious condition and has been admitted to the emergency department’s red zone.
Medical crews from Suem 118, Spisal inspectors and the firefighters’ regional NBCR team responded at the scene. Specialists collected samples and are carrying out air-quality measurements. Initial information indicates that oxygen levels were well below the legal limits, possibly due to the presence of heavy gases.
The deceased worker was employed as a subcontractor, a category that includes more than 4,000 of the nearly 5,000 workers at the Marghera shipyard. This is the fifth death recorded at Fincantieri this year, following fatal incidents in Palermo, Monfalcone and Ancona.
