Three Romanian construction workers were found dead on Monday in a water tank at a private residence near the city of Loulé, in southern Portugal. The incident is being treated preliminarily as a possible workplace accident.
The men were carrying out sealing work inside the tank when they died. According to the Portuguese gendarmerie, they were brought out lifeless, and emergency teams attempted to resuscitate them. The deaths were confirmed at the scene.
Local media report that the victims were 21, 24 and 40 years old and were Romanian citizens. The exact causes of the tragedy have not been established. Public broadcaster RTP indicates the possibility of poisoning inside the tank, but the hypothesis has not been officially confirmed.
The labor inspectorate was due to arrive at the scene to check how the work was carried out and establish the exact circumstances of the three workers’ deaths. The investigation will have to clarify whether occupational health and safety regulations were observed.
