A Romanian worker died on Wednesday afternoon, at around 4:00 p.m., in a workplace accident at a construction site in Comines-Warneton, Hainaut province, Belgium. The man was installing a Velux-type roof window when he fell from a ladder, suffering fatal injuries. His death was pronounced at the scene.
The accident occurred on Rue du Commerce, and the street was closed to traffic during the initial investigation. Authorities have opened an inquiry to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy and any possible liability.
Initial information indicated that the worker may have fallen from a roof, but investigators later determined that he had slipped from the ladder. The victim was employed by a company from France that was carrying out work in Belgium.
Labour inspector Sophie Salens told the Belga news agency that the checks focus on the worker’s employment status and the technical condition of the ladder used. Investigators are also examining compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, the victim’s training and equipment, as well as the legality of his posting or employment arrangement. If violations are identified, the company and its administrator could face criminal and administrative liability.
