Three Romanian workers died in a septic tank in the Algarve region of southern Portugal after falling unconscious while carrying out insulation work at a private residence. Portuguese authorities are investigating the case as a possible workplace accident caused by the accumulation of toxic gases.
The victims include two brothers, aged 21 and 24, and their 40-year-old uncle. According to initial information, the 40-year-old man was reportedly the owner of the company that had contracted the work.
Approximately 30 members of several emergency response teams took part in the rescue operation. Three other workers, also Romanian citizens, were pulled from the large tank. They refused transport to hospital.
The incident occurred in one of Portugal’s best-known tourist areas. The investigation will determine how the tragedy occurred, the working conditions and the responsibilities of those involved. Authorities are also checking whether occupational health and safety regulations were followed.
