A 66-year-old Romanian woman, Maria Ionescu, was found dead on the morning of October 15 in an orchard near the town of Francavilla al Mare, in Italy’s Chieti province. The woman, who lived in Mottola, disappeared while returning home with her husband after visiting their son in Rimini.
According to the Italian press, the couple stopped at a gas station in a motorway rest area near Miglianico. An argument reportedly broke out between the spouses, after which Maria allegedly got out of the car and did not return. The man drove to Mottola and reported her missing only after arriving home.
The searches conducted throughout the day initially yielded no results. Later, the woman’s body was discovered by the owner of a guesthouse in a difficult-to-access area. The woman was hanging from an olive tree by a wire, and a tractor was needed to recover the body.
Maria was wearing only a T-shirt, leggings, and slippers and did not have her mobile phone with her. The body was taken to the hospital in Chieti, where an autopsy was ordered. Investigators are examining all possibilities and have already questioned the victim’s husband and son.
