Cristian Tudor Popescu analyzed the outcome of the U.S. midterm elections and argued in a post published on Facebook Wednesday evening that Donald Trump had scored “a crushing victory” over his own party, the Republican Party.
Democrats won the U.S. midterm elections and are set to take control of Congress, roughly two years before the end of Trump’s second presidential term. The journalist ironically said that the U.S. president had prepared an explanation in advance for a possible defeat and noted that the election was neither postponed nor challenged through fraud allegations.
CTP argued that the election result was determined mainly by economic problems, such as rising prices for food, fuel and medical services. He also criticized the Trump administration and the president’s family, citing allegations and controversies associated with them.
The journalist identified “a ray of hope” in Abdulrahman El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan and in Black candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms’s victory in the race for governor of Georgia. Finally, CTP also commented ironically on President Nicușor Dan’s proposal that Romania cover the costs of stationing U.S. military personnel in the country. According to a source at Cotroceni Palace, the offer would include accommodation and fuel expenses.
