President Nicușor Dan officially proposed to U.S. official Elbridge Colby that Romania cover the costs of stationing American troops in the country, provide better accommodation conditions, and cover additional fuel expenses. The offer was made on Wednesday at Cotroceni Palace, during a discussion about Romania’s security and the future of the U.S. military presence in Europe.
According to a source in the Presidential Administration, the necessary amount is considered “sustainable,” although the figure has not been made public. At present, most of the costs of stationing American troops in Romania are borne by the United States. The subject was also discussed at a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence.
The development comes as Elbridge Colby, one of the architects of the Pentagon’s policy on reducing U.S. troops in Europe, is preparing a report for Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth. The document will include recommendations regarding the future of American forces on the continent, while the final decision will belong to President Donald Trump. It is expected in December.
After the meeting, Nicușor Dan stated that Romania remains fully committed to the Strategic Partnership with the United States and emphasized the importance of a stronger American economic and military presence in Romania. The two discussed security in the Black Sea region, regional stability, and the need for joint transatlantic action.
