Labor Minister Florin Manole said pensions will be increased from January 1, but the exact percentage will be determined following budget negotiations and an analysis of statistical data. Asked what figure he would propose if the decision had to be communicated immediately, the minister indicated a rate of 7.3%.
Manole specified that this figure does not represent a firm commitment by the Government or the Social Democratic Party, but an estimate that may be revised depending on the budgetary situation. He argued that the savings needed to meet fiscal commitments should not be achieved by freezing pensioners’ incomes, after two years without increases.
In December, pensioners with incomes of up to 3,000 lei will receive the second installment of the financial aid included in the solidarity package. The support is granted according to income: 500 lei for pensions of up to 1,500 lei, 400 lei for incomes between 1,500 and 2,000 lei, and 300 lei for pensions between 2,000 and 3,000 lei.
The minister described the aid as temporary and insufficient support that cannot replace a permanent increase in pensions. The money will be distributed either by card or through the post, without pensioners being required to opt for bank payments.
