The Minister of Labour announces that he is preparing the indexation of pensions: “We will submit to the Ministry of Finance and the prime minister the proposal to comply with the law, because after two years it is no longer bearable for pensioners”

Minister of Labor Florin Manole announced Saturday evening in Alba Iulia that he is preparing the proposal to index pensions in accordance with the law and that he will submit it to the Ministry of Finance and the prime minister. He maintains that pensioners can no longer bear the postponement of the increase, after two years in which pensions have not been indexed.

The final decision has not yet been made. The Ministry of Labor is awaiting the latest data on the evolution of inflation and the other indicators used to calculate the indexation. Subsequently, the authorities will determine the level of the increase and how it will be implemented.

Florin Manole says that budgetary resources exist for this measure. According to the minister, the projection for next year provides for expenditures of approximately 170 billion lei for social assistance, 12 billion lei above the estimated execution for the current year. The cost of the indexation is estimated at 9.5–9.6 billion lei, an amount that would fit within the aforementioned budget envelope.
