In Tbilisi, the protests escalated into violence on the day of the municipal elections, with furious demonstrators trying to force their way into the presidential palace. The opposition, accusing the ruling party, Georgian Dream, of authoritarianism and ties to Russia, organized this demonstration. The police used pepper spray and water cannons to disperse the protesters, who set fire to barricades. The Georgian Dream party has been accused of electoral fraud and stalling negotiations for joining the European Union.
